The Brief:
Bring a ragtag group of toys to life as they race through a household on a mission to help a boy catch the rest of a hockey game. The piece needed to balance humor, heart, and high-energy action while delivering character-driven animation at a cinematic scale.
Our Challenge:
In addition to building and animating established IP such as Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon, we were tasked with designing and building a wide range of original characters central to the mission. Each character needed to feel tactile and physically grounded, with animation that reflected the material they were made from. Hard plastics needed to stay rigid and weighty, while rubber characters required expressive stretch and bend without breaking believability. Maintaining consistency across a large animation team while preserving personality and performance was critical.
My Impact:
As CG Supervisor, I guided a large animation team through a performance-heavy production, shaping foundational design and animation decisions that set the tone early on. I worked closely with the animators day to day, providing clear guardrails and feedback to keep the work aligned and moving forward. Early in the process, I led character design explorations for the stretch character, using a mix of AI tools to generate character sheets and facial pose studies, allowing us to respond quickly to director and client feedback while accelerating iteration.
